Fantastic! You’ve Used all the Bits, but Your Multimodal Project is in Another Box

Fantastic! You’ve Used all the Bits, but Your Multimodal Project is in Another Box

Some of you may not have heard, but my original idea for this project was to create a Reassembler-type vlog where I assemble a Lego Technic Race Kart (#freeplugparty) whilst talking you through it. The idea was to show what it is really like to build something of moderate complexity, and possibly impart some interest unto you. When I watch James May put random shit together (I have attached an episode for your viewing pleasure), I find myself getting unusually excited when he is putting on the finishing touches. As someone who builds models, I can totally relate to him because I feel the same sensation when I put that last piece on a Gundam. The satisfaction is biblical. Naturally, I would hope that you would feel the same. You waste 30 minutes of your life watching some sweaty fat guy put together a children’s toy, so naturally you would want to see it through to the end. Alas, while the idea sounded good on paper (to me anyway), execution was impossible. I did not have the requisite equipment nor did I have any editing know-how. It took me about six hours to assemble the 345 pieces of the go kart, and frankly I do not see how I could edit that down to 30 minutes. So, in lieu of a vlog, I will decide to play to my strengths and create a visual presentation of some sort. The jury is still out on whether this will be a PowerPoint or a Prezi, but I am leaning towards the latter. By the way, the video I have included is one of my favorite episodes of The Reassembler. The entire run time is devoted to the reconstruction of an old-as-shit telephone. I STRONGLY dema…encourage you to watch it. Watch it for entertainment or, you know, an insomnia cure.

Idk Man, Just Ideas and Stuff

Idk Man, Just Ideas and Stuff

So I have some ideas about what I want to do for this multi modality project but no real set goals in mind. It all really has to do with if I have the time and capability to pull any of my ideas off.

One of my first ideas was to make a first person perspective video using a GoPro and creating something like this or at least the execution of it. I was thinking of incorporating something like a video game inventory that the “player” could pull up and use “tools” to solve different kinds of problems. Could even do just a day in the life of a student or through the eyes of a student as well and incorporate certain ideas from different readings that we’ve read through the semester. It just sort of depends if I plan everything out well enough.

Another idea was to make a type of board game based off a lot of the ideas around multi modality and what students can do with it. I was thinking of using certain games like PandemicHarbour, and/or others as an inspirations and a basis for some of the game play elements that I would want to incorporate. (Videos are kind of long but the first few minutes show how the game is played).

My idea was for this to be a game in which there are four players or four students and their job is to cooperate together to complete a final class assignment and to use different skill sets, strategies, and tools to accomplish that. The idea would be to have certain cards that would pose hindrances, challenges, or be helpful or hurtful items that could be used to take on the big assignment. That was just one of the things that came to mind of a type of game I could possibly make.

I was also thinking about simply making a simple video game myself using something like RPG maker or the like but what it would be about I’m not sure plus there is the difficulty of trying to code everything and the issue of time. Like the board game idea, I was thinking of following a similar approach but it would be a more individual experience rather than a collaborative one.
Obviously I won’t be able to do all of these but these were just some of the things that have been running through my brain.

Writing Instruction is Like a Box of Chocolates

Writing Instruction is Like a Box of Chocolates

I have gone through so many ideas of things that I want to incorporate in my final project it’s getting to the point where I just need to write some of this shit out before my head explodes [in a good way] : ) I came to the conclusion I would like to create a project that is essentially me persuading myself and other future English 130I instructors to do an Inquiry Project, rather than doing an Inquiry Paper.  From the beginning of thinking about what I may want to do for the actual project itself I have tried to come up with an idea of something involving baking and bringing treats for the entire class because it is just a great pick-me-up for May.  The one idea I think would work best for all that I hope to do with this project is a bit weird but I think it could work.

I want to make a box with individual sections for different baked goods that can represent ideas in English 431 we have read and discussed, kind of like a box of chocolates.  I was originally thinking I could do a piece of paper or cover sheet on the top that explains what each thing is and all the connections like a box of chocolates would have but thought there wouldn’t be enough room to do that on one piece of paper so I would need to have each baked good have it’s own piece of paper.  However, now I am thinking I could do the longer explanations for each thing as a Google Doc or even create a website because my new plan is to have the website or Google Doc link somehow included on the box or cover sheet.  One idea I have for a baked good I could use to represent an idea from the course is sweet energy balls that would represent Russell’s “Activity Theory” and the idea that there are varying forms of participation for every writing activity in 130.

Possible Timeline:

Monday, 4.17: Pass around a piece of paper in-class where my classmates can write if they have any dietary or allergy specific needs.

Friday, 4.21: Have a good list of the baked goods I am making and how they represent ideas and things I have learned in 431 that possibly convince me to use a multimodal project in English 130.

Monday, 4.24: The box should be finished by now so that I can focus on either the website or Google Doc I am using for the explanations.  I was thinking of using the articles from 431 I actually printed out to decorate the outside of the box but I will also need to spruce it up somehow as well.

Friday, 5.5: All the explanations need to be finished by this date so I can begin baking.

Monday, 5.8: I think it would be best for me to present my project on Monday rather than Wednesday so that I can do my baking over the weekend and the goods will still be the yummiest they can be.

Multimodal Project Idea

Multimodal Project Idea

So after a few drinks with Elisa the other day I was pretty sold on the idea of making a Zine. However, after a slight amount of thought, I thought I could do something more fun using that as an idea. So here I present that idea, and expect great praise when it is completed. Essentially a zine has similar qualities to that popular youtube genre of “draw my life”. So, I figured I would “draw my experience in this class”. However, rather than just adopting that idea, I figured I would combine many different ideas to bring out the experience of the class. Seeing as probably most of us entering this class would find multimodality confusing and difficult, I think there has been progress as a whole of understanding it better, and wanting to use it more. That being said I want to show this evolution in a video. First start in text…then showing that evolve into perhaps the click of a link to show a meme. Then incorporate some music, leading to maybe video to represent vlog responses, and maybe something special to finish it off. Essentially I want to represent our shift as a class toward moving to a more multimodal accepting class.  Just an idea though…
