I guess it is true, yellow does incite fear!!!

I guess it is true, yellow does incite fear!!!

When I started reading chapter one of the Yellow book, insert scary noises here, a bunch of long complicated word like Legitimate Peripheral Participation, were thrown at me. My first instinct was to put down the book and go eat a cinnamon bun. But I didn’t give up and power walked through those complicated terms. But there was one term that I was not sure I understood all the way. On page thirty one the term “Apprenticeship” pops up. But later on the same page it is described as situated learning, or learning by doing. Does that mean that when “Apprenticeship” pops up; they are talking about learning by doing. Or is it something completely different? Just something I was never quit clear of when I started reading.

Even with the grueling experiences of the dreaded vocabulary, I finally understood this chapter in class when I discussed it with my lovely group mate Kory. Thank you Kory :) Legitimate Peripheral Participation is a very cool way of teaching and educating. Imagine if you will a circle, a circle that represents all the knowledge of a certain subject. The closer you are to the center, the more you know about the subject. But no one ever reaches the center, because no one person can ever know everything.. You are constantly moving, with other people, within the circle. We as teachers should learn to use this form of educating, because I think it will tear down the wall between students and teacher. The student should still give the teach respect and learn from what they say. But the teacher should not think they are better then the student or that they know enough for the rest of their lives. I’ve met a few teacher like that within my k-12 experience and everyone hated being in those teacher’s classes. Opps I went on a tangent, sorry. Even though this book does scare me a little, I will work past that fear a gain every bit of knowledge I can from the coming up chapters, especially if it makes me a better educator.

  1. I empathize with you. :( This chapter was somewhat intimidating. After a second read, I was able to grasp the concept behind chapter one. I guess no one could enter into the center. An individual may have extended knowledge in a particular area, but as you said, no person can know everything. Although the idea to gain complete knowledge does sound wonderful and scary. Oh the power !! “ヘ(`▽´*) Mwa haha
Oh well, one can only dream.. hehe ^^
