David Castillo: Intro to Me

David Castillo: Intro to Me

  1. I am David Matthew Castillo a 3rd Year at Chico State. My background story is very interesting and all over the place. Throughout all my k-12 schooling, I would move every year all throughout the state of California.Coming to college was my first opportunity to call  a single place my “home”. For finally having my own place of home at Chico State, I have made a lot of opportunities to branch out my new home and create connections throughout the campus. I have gotten myself involved in various organizations throughout campus to create my network that I have not had a chance to do.

2)To me there is  not  such a thing as just one type of “reader” and  I think that is one of the many misconceptions about being a “reader”. To me being a reader is being able to engage to understand and  take in information  in a way that you can understand/relate to yourself. Outside of school I read a lot casually such as checking my work emails, fraternity emails, and school emails. Although it is school related I have a habit of refreshing myself even outside of a school environment. Outside of school on my downtime, I read a lot of Reddit which is one of my very reads as they are tons of subreddits or communities to read in and about. My outside of school reading does not correlate much with my actual school work however that  is not necessarily a bad thing. My main takeaway from the Williams article is just very eye opening and brings up the prevalent issue  that  how society is very precise and is  very grey area about the perception and the implications of readers in general. That society labels and divides up  what they view/see as an ideal reader and that idea is further explained in detail in the article. It was a very good article and brought up many interesting points that we will be continuing to talk about.

  1. Thanks for the intro David! And I too love me some Reddit! This is a great insight: “To me being a reader is being able to engage to understand and take in information in a way that you can understand/relate to yourself. ” Makes me wonder how we can support students to see reading in this way? How can we support their own reading choices so they come to make those connections…

  2. Thank you so much for sharing a little bit about yourself! I’m glad you feel at home here in Chico, so do I! I can relate to you as well because I do find myself reading emails all the time. I enjoyed the article as well and have the same opinion as you. After reading the article I thought that maybe the way we define a “reader” isn’t really what a reader is. This question I might think about for the rest of the semester!
