Destinee Garcia – Welcome to my Ted talk

Destinee Garcia – Welcome to my Ted talk

Hey everybody! My name is Destinee Garcia. I am a 3rd year student here at Chico State but this is my 1st semester as a Liberal Studies major! I switched my major 3 times so I’m finally at home in this department. I am originally from Santa Maria, California. In high school I did not see myself going to college and pursuing a degree. But when my high school boyfriend got accepted into Chico State I chose to follow him. Now we’re going on four years and both majoring in liberal studies. Since being a student I’ve been involved with Christian Challenge where I’ve committed my life to follow Christ and serve people. As a student leader I was given the privilege of being a Sunday school teacher at a local church. This experience as well as being a CARD employee has opened my eyes to the beautiful occupation of teaching! I’m so excited to love and serve children, as well as build meaningful relationships with them. In my free time I love to hammock, scrapbook and quote vines. You can also catch me working at Jamba Juice and volunteering with Reading Pals.

2. To me a good “reader” is someone who reads to exercise their mind. By exercising your mind I mean to ask questions, make connections, apply that into your life and so forth. A good reader is someone who can analyze what they read. Outside of school I enjoy reading spiritual books and using that material to help my growth. The best part of reading is being able to tell a friend “In this book I read…” and using that material to help them in some way. No, my out of school reading doesn’t really connect to what I read for school. My top takeaway from the Williams article is that children do not need to read fast to be a good reader. I grew up taking speed reading assessments and feeling better then other students. But that was not the case, just because I was fast did not mean I was retaining anything. From this article I would love to implement reading habits with my future students and instill that into them early on. It would be great to give my students questions to ponder and send them home thinking.

  1. I really like your idea and agree with your explanation of what it means to being a reader. As for your background that is interesting to hear that you and your boyfriend to both wanting to be teachers as that is pretty awesome assuming that you two both carry the same passion that you displayed throughout the text.
