Sydney Swain – Learning to be the best teacher in the world!

Sydney Swain – Learning to be the best teacher in the world!

Intro: My name is Sydney Shaye Swain! I like my name a lot. I think a name holds a lot of a person’s identity.  I  cannot flipping wait to be a teacher. Yes, like most future teachers, I love children, however I feel like I have a special connection to young students and learning. I am a very encouraging, complimenting person. I think that kind of positivity is really going to serve me well in my future classroom.  I dream of making students confident learners. School is a place where a child spends most of their time; they deserve it to be a place of growth. I really just want my own classroom already. The sooner I can be Ms. Swain, the better. I also like crafting, Disney Land, mashed potatoes, my boyfriend, our garden, and our house!

“A Reader” : When a teacher recognizes a reader, they mean a student who truly enjoys reading. They usually do not mean the faster reader, or the student with the best “fluency rate”. I like that the article challenges the reader by saying that we ask our students to assume the identity of a reader, so we need to explain to our students what a “reader” means, so they do not form their own stigmas. Being a reader is just being a person who is drawing intertextual connections, enjoying a story, 0r being a part of a community through books. There is not ever just one meaning, but reading is an important thing to make your class love, while feeling proud of it.

  1. Love the idea of being a part of a community through books…how do we create educational spaces that encourage a love of reading? How can we give up control so students develop their own reading identities? Glad to have another class with you!

  2. I really enjoyed your thoughts on the idea of not forming a stigma of a a “reader” for students I think that is very important to stop students from being discouraged from reading. I also like your snippet on school should be a part of their growth and make them confident which I think you will be able to do in the future someday!
