Melissa Morse

Melissa Morse

Hello everyone! My name is Melissa Morse, I am currently a Junior at Chico State, and I am a Liberal Studies major with a concentration in English. I am originally from Granite Bay, CA which is about 30 minutes north of Sacramento. Not only am I student but I am also on the dance team here at school and I am the Captain/President of the team, so I have a lot of extra responsibilities. I have always been passionate about teaching ever since I was younger. I always found myself looking up to my educators and wanting to pursue the career path that they have chosen. I am not exactly sure what I am looking to get out of this course. I hope that through being able to help students that may have difficulty writing it will make me a better writer and future educator of writing.

A passage that I found interesting in the Wenger article was that learning is not a separate activity. She goes into much more depth talking about how when we are challenged beyond our familiarity our learning is intensified. I found this particularly interesting because when I think about my educational career the classes I remember and feel as though I gained the most from I was not in the typical “classroom setting”. I was usually placed in a group with other people where we were able to learn and help those around us. These groups really helped challenge my learning and forced me to see me beyond how I learned a subject. As future educators I believe this is extremely important because not everyone learns or picks up on things the same way, so we should be able to address there needs by offering different ways of looking at a subject or lesson.

  1. I definitely agree that I enjoy working in groups too! I think you’re right that working in groups helps people understand certain concepts better. It’s great that you’re thinking of alternative ways to connect to your students, I think that’s really important to do as a teacher.

  2. Hey Melissa! That’s awesome! I’m sure you’ve already gained a lot of great teaching tips as the captain/president of your dance team. :) What age group do you want to teach in the future?
