Self Introduction ENGL 431

Self Introduction ENGL 431

Hello my name is Jossalyn Nelson. I am currently pursuing my BA in English Studies and I have an AS in Fashion Merchandising and Design. I am aiming to teach English in Japan and possibly live there as a permanent resident. After traveling to Japan I developed an appreciation for their culture and knew that I could live there. A few hobbies that I pursue are drawing, horseback riding, playing guitar, and sometimes video gaming. What I am hoping to get out of this class is that it will strengthen my tutoring skills making the transition to Japan easier, I will learn how to teach students effectively so that they can understand the subjects being taught, and learn to  communicate effectively even with the language barriers.

  1. Nice to meet you Jossalyn! It’s very interesting that you have an AS in Fashion Merchandising and Design. How did you decide to study that? What will you use it for? I was also wondering what you though of the assigned reading? Did they get your attention at all or relate to your future career teaching English in Japan? : ) Karanda

    1. I decided to study fashion back in high school then saw that Butte college offered a program. I am hoping to use it to open a wedding dress store :) For the Wenger readings it was a very informative, but so far I have found that the readings by Judith and Bartholomae were more useful when teaching English in Japan. My favorite reading so far is by Bartholomae. His examples are a little lengthy but I do like the main idea of students not pushing themselves to step outside their comfort zones and how we can solve this as teachers.
