Cyrill Somera – Intro

Cyrill Somera – Intro

  1. As you can tell from the title, my name is Cyrill Somera. I’m from a small town called Plumas Lake and I am currently in my third year of college. So far, this has been such an amazing, but also challenging, journey. I started out college as a Pre-Nursing major in an effort to satisfy my Asian parents’ expectation of joining the medical field. Deep inside my heart, I knew nursing wasn’t what I was passionate about, but I ignored this feeling and tried to make my parents proud. I was drowning in hours of work I didn’t care for and I could no longer take it. Half way through my sophomore year, I finally made the most daring decision ever and decided to make myself happy. The second semester of my sophomore year I was officially declared a Liberal Studies major. Yes, my parents were a little disappointed their daughter wasn’t going to follow their footsteps and become a nurse, but they learned to accept that this is what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. So, here I am typing this blog for my English 341 class in hopes to learn and to be inspired to hopefully one day become a great educator.
  2. What does it mean to be a “reader”? Words can have so many meanings and be used in many different contexts. Reading is something people do in different ways. Some people enjoy reading all the time and others absolutely despise it. My best friend loves listening to her audiobooks as she drives to school and my sister can only stand to read the menus at restaurants. It all depends on  the person you are. Reading is such an important skill to have, but it isn’t just reading words and sentences on a page, I think reading is so much more than that. Reading is being able to understand and interpret what a passage is written about. It can help you understand what a character might be feeling or it can help you see the view from a high mountain top. Reading can paint pictures in someone’s head or help someone feel a character’s sadness. Unfortunately for me, I used to enjoy reading so much. I used to always carry a book with me in middle school. I would read during lunch recess while everyone played on the jungle gym and ran around on the black top. As I got older, I feel like I had less and less time to read a book until I stopped completely unless it was required for one of my classes, of course. The Williams article really helped me define what reading was. It’s not about how fast a student can read a passage, or how many words a student knows. It’s about how well a student can understand the reading and stumble across a foreign works and be able to be brave enough to look it up and learn what it means.

  1. I think it’s awesome that you decided to switch majors and picked one that you are actually interested in. If becoming a teacher is what makes you happy then continue to purse it! The way you described a reader is very accurate, the examples of your sister and best friend were great.
