Reading and talking about it with other people?

Reading and talking about it with other people?

Something that has been resonating with me is Donalyn Miller’s concept of a reading tribe. First off, I love the idea of kids reading and talking about what they read. I never had that as a kid. I was always told to be quite and read my book, no one encouraged me to talk to someone else about my reading. I used to see reading to be a solitary action, but now i see it as a communal action. My fellow students could of become literary sponsors. I also love the idea of always having book on me. I just bought a kindle and I read it all the time now. When im waiting for a class or outside waiting for a friend I whip out my kindle and read some Game Of Thrones or some Land Of Stories. I have read more in the past month then I have in the past two years. Before this semester I would’ve never thought that just having a book near me would increase my reading habits, but it does and I love it.

  1. I agree! Discussing books is a huge part of what makes reading so great. It is so important for kids to feel like they can express their opinions on books. I also have found a love for the kindle. You will find some people who are a little snobbish towards the kindle but the book prices are usually much less than their paper counterparts so I don’t care. When I was a nanny, last summer, for a newborn the kindle saved me from sure boredom. The baby was great but not much of a conversation there, so the kindle helped pass the time. It also takes up much less space!
