Cheyenne W, Wonder

Cheyenne W, Wonder

Hi Lindsay,

I first picked this book up when I went on the DC and NY trip about six months ago, but I only read the first 25-30 pages because I didn’t really think it was that interesting and I really didn’t like it that much then. But now that I am reading it again for this project, and I really like it much better.  It has most definitely surprised me.

I think its interesting that it doesn’t have “chapters” so to speak but more sections like in a news article, but I really like that its not like any other typical book. So far I’m 136 pages in the book and in Jacks point of view. One of the thing that is different about this book and I really appreciate is how each person has a section how it is through there eyes. How do you feel about this?

One thing I don’t understand about this book so far is why Jack has his own section, although I’m only about 4 pages into his section I still don’t understand why the author decided to give him one because Jack isn’t one of his friends. I like how the author puts Via’s story and how she feels about having a brother like August. I wonder why there mom doesn’t have a section yet or a combined section with there mom and dad?

I hope you like it too. What do you think of the book so far?

  1. Hi Cheyenne!

This is so awesome because I am just now getting into Jack’s section, although I think i’m a little farther than you. Right away I really liked this book because it’s very eye opening. I know everyone has probably been in a situation where they judged someone without getting to know them first. I have really learned at this point in my life how important it is to get to know people before we make rude judgements and this book easily shows why! When I read this book I totally forget that August has anything wrong with him at all because he sounds so “normal”. It makes you understand that he is a human being with feelings and it’s so sad when you think about how many people of through what he’s going through. How do you feel about this?

I’m glad you mentioned Jack having his own section because honestly I love that he does. I know you said that Jack isn’t August’s friend but I think that deep down he is. He just doesn’t want to admit it to Julian because he will look uncool! I’m not saying that’s okay, because it isn’t at all, but I think Jack really cares about August and I hope we see more of that in his section in the book.

As far as his parents having a section, I think they will because we still have more than half of the book to read! I guess we will find out :) I’d love to hear more of your thoughts about all of this because so far I love this book. I want to hear what you think about Jack after you read all of his section!

    1. I agree, all the people just judged him by his “cover”. But as Jack and Summer got to know him they say that he was funny and he’s really nice and they just start to love him.

I think there are definitely a lot of people going through what he went through but I don’t think that its in only 5th grade. I think its starts to happen more in like 7th and 8th grade, or maybe even high school. But it is for sure sad what he’s going through. And also what Via is going through… losing her friends to new people and finding new friends.

After reading Jacks section it all makes sense now and I think it was very ridiculous that Julian was starting that war against him for Jack just trying to be friends with him. After reading his section I thought that the author did a very good job of showing that Jack really is his friend but he wanted to be “cool” in front of his “friends” so thats why he did it. It was also very easy to relate to because its such a thing a kid my age would do.

So I finished the book and thought it was great! I think in the end it was good that the parents didn’t end up having their own section. But I really did like how the book ended it was great! I hope that 13 Reasons Why will be just as good!

  2. I agree with everything you are saying! It seems like the older you get, the meaner you can be. So it’s really important to always be nice to people because you never know what they’re going through.

I am almost finished with 13 Reasons Why. I can tell you now that it’s a really difficult book to read because it’s so sad. It’s similar to Wonder in the sense that both characters are kind of “bullied”. Read a little bit and let me know what you think.

  3. So far in the book I have really enjoyed it! But I’m not gonna lie, when I first started the book I thought it was a girl “speaking’’ not guy. I think I thought it was a girl because out on the front cover theres a girl, but as soon as I started to get into the book the cover made a lot more sense. Why do you think that the book cover is a girl on a swing?

Like Wonder I like how the Chapters are different, I like how they are the front and back sides of the Cassettes. I really like this book, but it is very sad and interesting. I think it was interesting how the author put Hannah talking on the Cassettes in italic text and the other people in regular font. Why do you think the author did it that way?

I’m not very far in the book but for me its not very hard to understand the book so far. Why do you think it is a hard read? I will admit its challenging but its not hard. I think its not hard for me because I like these kinds of books. The mystery, the fear, the worry, the interest in why its happening that way. Thats also I think why I very much liked the two book series Divergent and The Hunger Games. After you’re done with this project I think you should read these books if you have time to.

I see what you where saying when you said that the where both being bullied in both books. But I think that they where a different type of bullying. For example in Wonder he is being bullied because of the way he looks and the kids around him/ the kids being his friends where being bullied because they thought it was uncool or weird or different. But in 13 Reasons Why, well at least the part I’m at, she has been bullied because of how she acts/ the things she does. So basically she is being judged by the people that are in or surrounding her life. So both of these books are about bullying and how they dealt with it.

  4. So I think the girl is on a swing because she’s on a playground where she had her first kiss, like she mentions in the book. I also think Hannah talks in italics so it’s easier to see when she’s talking as opposed to when someone else is talking. I love your last thoughts on the books. There are so many different reasons to be bullied as we see here so there’s kind of a theme going on in our books! Kind of interesting.

So i’m sure you already know we get to meet in my class in November! I am so excited to finally meet you and Gianni!! Since we are creating a project in class about 13 reasons why (or a theme of our books) I figured we should start brainstorming some things we could make once we meet up. Do you have any ideas???

  5. I think its interesting that you think that shes on a swing because that’s where her first kiss was. But if that is the real reason the cover is a girl on a swing I think that is a little weird to have it like that because it, to me, doesn’t really seem like a reasonable reason to have it that way. I would understand if it was a case full of cassettes or really depressing looking girl or thirteen behind a girl like all whispering about her. But I wonder why out of the possibility she chose to girl on a swing. What would you have put as the cover if you where the author?

Oh and I wanted ask you why you think that they used the guy to use for his point of view instead of someone else in the book? (But I’m not very far in the book, only like 150 pages in, so if in the book later just say to read father)

I see what you are saying about there being a theme in our books about bullying and there are so many different was to be bullied by people, as shown in these books. So for our project I think we should do something about or for bullying. Like a website or a Poster or something like that. Would you want to do something like that or would you want to do something else?

  6. I think a poster would be awesome for our artifact!

As for why Clay is the main point of view in 13 reasons why, I think it has to do with how nice he is. I don’t want to say to much depending on where you are in the book. If you haven’t gotten to his tape yet, then you won’t know. The book doesn’t say why the author chose him, but I think it’s because he’s just a genuinely nice person and because he had a crush on Hannah.
