Lauryn R – Counting By 7’s

Lauryn R – Counting By 7’s

I just finished Counting by 7’s. I have mixed feelings about my opinion on it though. I thought it was a good story and I like how the plants and the idea of 7’s come out a lot throughout the book. Counting By 7’s reminded me a little about If I Stay. For example I thought Willow Chance and Mia Hall ( main character in If I Stay)  both had a big sudden change in there life and they are both trying to cope with their loss and find their way through grief and life.

Dell was a really interesting character in the book and i feel like he added a lot to the story. His categories and labels he gave to people were thought provoking and made me notice how we use labels all the time. I also feel Jairo was an important character because he made Willow feel important and special. The cat Cheddar was also a character I felt was a important character because it really makes dell feel he needs to do something in his life.

The ending was very happy and didn’t make me feel like there should be an other book which I feel a lot. I thought the book was over all a really good book and was a good quicker read but was a engrossing book.

  1. I agree with the mixed feelings. The book was great and written with lots of metaphor, figurative language and voice that really mad it interesting. For instance, I love the way she relates the word”COZY” to old people.! HAHAH! I can see the connection!
The author did such a great job capturing Willow Chance’s character. The sevens, plants and medical disease obsession helped form her character into what Dell would label “Mutant.” Although I have not read If I STAY, I do feel that Willow goes through multiple changes and has to learn to cope with her loss.
Do you feel she coped well? I do her brain and thought process is so cool, calm, collective, and logical. I wish I was like her! I believe just because her brain worked a certain way that it helped her deal.
Dell was an interesting character. He did add to the story by his crazy labels that seemed to discomfort me a bit. I do not think we people can just fit into one label, and if we did how would we justify the correct one? I almost thought that Dell and Mai’s mom were gonna hook up but the taxi driver was my second choice. Im kind of glad because some of the actions of Dell, the guidance counselor were questionable. I was waiting for the arrest when he was taking 13 year olds off campus to get ice cream. His actions were not like any counselor I have ever had.
Overall it was a good read with a happy ending. Willow Chance was able to cope and even help her new friends cope with change and union.
