Kissing the Witch

Kissing the Witch

1.) My favorite story would have to be “The Tale of the Hair”. All of the stories in this book end up having some really twisted part to it and this story really stuck out to me. The blind girl in the story is blind, and somehow ends up in the care of this woman. They live in a hut together and the girl convinces the woman to build a tower for her so she can “live up in the light”. The woman does it, not to trap her, but to make her happy and protect her. One of my favorite parts is when the prince comes at night and sees the girl standing high up in the tower. He climbs up and clearly the girl is falling for him. The woman visits her the next day and asks her why she’s so happy, and when she doesn’t tell her, the woman gets upset. The twist is that woman is actually the prince. The woman plays the part of sort of a savior to the girl. It’s so interesting to me that she plays it off as if the blind girl needs her but really. she is the one who needs to girl. This is a theme in all the stories, but I love how in the end none of them need a “prince” in their life because having each other is what they ultimately needed.

2.) I think the book is called “Kissing the Witch” because that’s exactly what these stories are about, metaphorically of course. It’s about doing the unexpected, it’s about accepting who you are, it’s about not judging someone because we all have got our stories. This book all comes back to having some sort of worse being in it. The author gives you this idea that they are bad people, but reading further you find out that they weren’t born that way. Somewhere along the way something happened to them that changed them, whether it be for the better or worse. I believe this is something that everyone can apply to themselves and I think that’s wonderful. This book especially emphasizes women and it’s obvious how little any males are included in the stories. As someone who’s very feminist, it’s so awesome to see authors who also show the same views hidden in their readings. This book was amazing!
