Brown girl Dreaming- sarah roberts

So far reading Brown Girl Dreaming I have really enjoyed the book. The opening poem touches on civil rights and the movements taking place when Jacqueline was born. The poem is suggesting that the preexisting racial conditions in the US at the time are going to have a lasting effect on her for her entire life. I really enjoyed reading a text with form and structure. Opening with a poem sets an entirely different tone that hooked me as a reader and also was very powerful.
