Hi Jackie~

Right now in Wonder I’m just learning what Via’s side of the story is. I think that it is pretty sad because if it is your brother or sister I think that you would be grateful for them. I don’t think Via should talk about her brother like that at all. I think that Via is only talking like that now because she is worried about what her friends will think. What do you think of the book so far and how do you think Via is treating her brother?

Even though August gets made fun of I think it’s very courageous of him to go to school and keep going. I also think that it’s very courageous of him to talk to people at his school and get friends to hang out with, and for his friends they are very kind and nice to him. I think if I got the chance I would be August’s friend even if he gets made fun of or looks a little different. I think it would be neat to know about what has happened during his life. What would you think?

How are you liking the book so far? Did you get the book because the last book you said you didn’t get? Last night when I was reading Wonder I got so zoned into the book that I read for an hour and a half. I usually only read for a half an hour, so that was pretty long for me! If you were August would you have gone to school or would you continue home school? This book is so good that I feel like I know August and that I’ve been his friend for awhile now.

Overall I think that this book is really good so far and I want to read some more of R.J. Palacio’s books. The only thing that I dislike about these kinds of books is that they keep you waiting to find out what’s next or in this case what his face looks like. I really liked the part of the book where Summer went and sat with August and named off all the names that have something to do with Summer. I’d bet that August thinks that summer is the nicest person at his school right now. I think that he needs to be a little more courageous and sit with someone else at lunch and find someone else that can be his friend.

Ian T, A Mango Shaped Space / Wonder

Hi Jackie

I just finished the book A Mango Shaped Space yesterday and I really liked it! What did you think of the book? At the beginning I got a bit lost, but then it started to unwind for me. It always seemed like she liked her cat a lot but once he died it really showed how much she loved him. I can relate to that though because my dog died a few years ago and it was really, really sad. Her cat along with my dog just pretty much was a part of our family, so when they died it just gets really emotional.

I’m currently on page 47 of Wonder, and so far it kind of brings my thoughts back to A Mango Shaped Space because Mia and August are a lot alike. They both have differences with the people in their life. I noticed one major difference so far though and that is that Mia didn’t really get made fun of for her disease and August does. I think that August made a good choice of going to school because I think later in the book he will like it after all.

The Wonder book was really hard for me to put down last night when I was reading the only thing that stopped me was having to go to soccer practice. When the author said on the back of the book “I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.” I was really bummed out because that is what I really want to find out! The one hint that I got so far is that he does have ears but not exactly.

Have you started reading Wonder yet? What did you think about A Mango Shaped Space? I really loved the book and would recommend it to everyone that likes cats or has a pet. I hope to hear from you soon Jackie and learn what you think of these books!

Hey Jackie~

The book A Mango Shaped Space that we are currently reading is very interesting to me. In the beginning of the book I was kind of lost, but now I’m on page 120 so I am understanding the book a lot more. In the beginning of this school year my friends were telling me about this book and how good it was, but I din’t really listen to them. Now that I’ve gotten the chance of this project and listened to my friends I’m very thankful I did. How far are you in the book so far?

At first I didn’t really understand what was going on with Mia. I mostly didn’t understand when she drew the math problems on the board in different colors, but now that I’m on page 120 I’m understanding the book a lot more. I think that the disease that Mia has would be kind of fun and cool to have. What would you think if you had her disease?

Another part of the book that I didn’t understand was when Mia’s friend Stella got mad at her for not telling her about her disease. I can’t blame her though because if I had something nobody else had at my school I wouldn’t share it either. I mean it would be a difference and all but it really makes you smarter in some ways. I can relate to that though because I’ve gotten in fights with my friends before and it is not very fun and especially if you just stop talking altogether.
