Poetry
Brown Girl Dreaming has been a struggle for me so far. I LOVED my last book, so I was hoping to feel the same about this one. I think that I have two problems with the book. One is that I have never been a huge fan of poetry. I feel like it is hard for me to connect with the author because of the way that it is written. I feel like I read the book a lot slower just because of the format of the book. I have so far read about 70 pages and have not yet been drawn to the book. The other problem I have is that she somewhat talks about herself in third person. She describes her birth as if she was there. I hope that I can find a way to get into this book because I think it is important for people to read books that touch on the way African Americans were being treated in our country. This would be a good read for middle school aged students, because although it is not a tough read, it is long and hard to get into. Although I have not yet gotten into this book, I hope I do!
I decided to write both poems because I did not have much to say about my book.
Cento poem:
We all have the same dream… to live equal in a country that’s supposed to be the land of the free
When there are many worlds you can choose the one you walk into each day
At dusk just as the fireflies flicker on, my grandfather makes his way home
Will we always have to choose between home and home?
Love that Dog:
So much depends
upon
A teacher
Hardworking and enthusiastic
or lazy and angry
The futures of the students depend on this.

I read Brown Girl Dreaming as well. I had trouble getting into the book, and I’m not entirely sure why. Probably because it is written in a style I am not accustomed to and because based on the content it is not something I would generally pick. I hope you get into it later on. About half way through the book I couldn’t put it down! I was even disappointed when it ended! Some books are worth that iffy first half, and I have to say that this is one of them.
In your cento poem, I feel your choice of lines is really powerful. I love that the lines don’t really correlate, but somehow they still do. I also love how you chose to write about teachers in your Love that Dog poem. Very creative!
Michelle, I hope I can get into the book like you did!
