Kellie Decius–A Little About Me
Hi! I am Kellie. I was born and raised in Napa where I have three siblings and the sweetest chocolate lab you would ever meet. I am a sophomore and I am majoring in Liberal Studies with a minor in English. I have been working with children for as long as I can remember. From babysitting to coaching a soccer team my senior year, I began to realize what I wanted to do as a career. I love the idea of finding new and exciting ways to teach and to make kids excited to come back to school the next day.
When I think of a “reader”, I think of someone who has a love for reading. I think of someone who yearns to learn new things all the time. Whether it is fun reading on your own or assigned reading, a reader is someone who is able to take in all the necessary information and even more, even if they do have to read it more than once.
Outside of school I love picking up a book and being able to escape into a new world. Most of my books tend to fit into the category of adult fiction. But besides reading books, I am constantly reading, whether it is online or a new recipe I am trying. I feel as I read differently outside of school. A lot of the time, I can;t always “get into” the readings when they are assigned to me. I always catch myself thinking of anything other than the reading and I have to go back and reread it. I think my love for reading outside of school does translate to my school reading. I think this because it helps me want to read the reading and take something from it, rather than just breezing through it and hoping the teacher doesn’t call on me the next day. I really enjoyed William’s article. I thought it was very interesting. The passage that stuck out most to me was, ” Good readers…, do not necessarily read fast, do not necessarily understand what they read the first time…often finish reading with more questions then they started.” I enjoyed this passage specifically because I think it shows the students that it is okay if you don’t understand and get everything the first time you see it. I also really liked how we should have more questions after we are done. I think that this is important because it means the the reading was making you think and engage yourself in the reading, and not just breezing through it.

Hi Kellie! I’m looking forward to being your partner and reading your posts throughout the semester. That’s really cool that you are minoring in English! English is my favorite subject by far. I would probably tack it on as another minor if I wasn’t so close to graduating. Your definition of what a “reader” agrees with mine. I also believe that a “reader” is someone who enjoys reading. Although I really like the subject of English, I am not a “reader”. I prefer to write. I think it’s really cool that you like to read. It’s nice that you can read and it can take you into a whole new reality that is not your own. I’m slightly jealous of that… usually when I’m reading I tend to drift off and start thinking about all the things I have to do! I need to work on that, lol. I enjoyed reading your post and can’t wait to read more! Good luck this semester!
