Snapchat-754286516589803141My full name is Julie Estefani Garcia, yes I spelled it right its Estefani with the “E” no “ph” and an “I” instead of a “y”. I was raised in the small country town of Capay where my nearest neighbor was like a mile away. I actually had an amazing neighbor that introduced me to my second language in which I am currently typing now, English. My parents were born in Mexico as I so happened to be born in Chico which makes me Mexican-American.

I have a small family of 2 siblings and my parents. Last spring my sister graduated from Chico state and is now a probation officer for Glenn County. My brother lives in eureka and is an awesome pastor for his church. I am the so-called baby in the family but with high expectations to meet. I just recently got a golden retriever border collie mix puppy which is my baby. Canelo is a HUGE part of my family already.

As I read the article I realized that I am a reader. I do define a lot of people as readers now. A common misconception of a reader is that you are defined as a nerd. It was so crazy to realize that as soon as they put the word “good” in front of reader it changed the meaning from nerd to smart. Outside of school I do a lot of reading which starts with all the reading I do on my phone. I start the day reading people’s tweets, Instagram posts, snap chats, and Facebook status or articles. Might one not consider that a part of someone’s reading but I am simply doing the act of reading. Sometimes my out of school reading will connect with my school reading. For example, when I am  reading at school I often remember a random fact that I read somewhere that is associated to the school reading. In other cases, it does not relate at all because I am reading “yo I am sooo hungrayyy and tired” snap chats from friends. A take away from the article that I took in is that I am doing a lot of reading without even realizing it. If I take the time and invest it in the right kind of reading I can focus on making time to read. Often I tell myself that I haven’t started a book of my liking because I don’t have time, but if I am often reading quotes and tweets then I can totally invest that same time to do my desired reading.

  1. Hey Julie, thanks for the blog! And I live in Capay too! We’ve lived here for about 16 years…love being in the middle of nowhere. Really enjoyed reading about your background and the pictures are great. That puppy is beyond cute. Your insights about reading are really thoughtful. Thanks for the first blog! Kim

  2. Julie! Your puppy is so adorable! I agree that putting the word “good” does change the meaning of what a reader can be defined as. I also for a while thought readers were people who read books, but today it is someone who reads pretty much anything no matter which style of reading they excel in. I think I need to put my phone down and spend time on books I bought to spend my free time reading.

  3. Hey Julie :) your middle name is spelled very uniquely, I’ve never come across anybody with that spelling for it. We are total opposites I’m the oldest of my family so I’m setting the bar for my sibblings. You’re puppy is super cute, I have a dog myself no idea what breed he is we took in a stray and she was prego therefore I got my baby steevee (named after the monkey for cloudy with a chance of meat balls :)
