The Weenie Series- Kaitlyn Huntley

The Weenie Series- Kaitlyn Huntley

Before this class I had never heard of this series before. When I started reading these books, I was expecting something very different. I was expecting all the stories to go together and I was expecting the stories to be about weenies. The only story about weenies in these books is the story the book is named after.

I enjoyed reading these stories, and I liked how these books are made up of several short stories. They would be very good books for a child because they could read one story at a time. It would be a nice book to read on edge time and during reading emergencies. It would also be a nice series for a child that got bored with reading about the same thing.

The author of these books was very good at describing. These would be a good books for children to look at if they were trying to learn about using descriptive words. As an assignment, you could assign each child a different story and have them find all the descriptive words or phrases inside that story. Each child could then share with the class to show the class different ideas.

While reading these books, I thought a fun way to use these books would be as books that are read to the students. I think that, as the teacher, you could make these books come to life with emotion. I would read one of these books out loud once it got close to Halloween.

In the back of these books there are writing ideas and research activities. I would use some of these questions as quick write questions that the students could answer in their journals. I also found one lesson plan online that went with this book. I liked this lesson plan because it gave you several conversation starters to talk about these books, and it gave you several writing activities. I would read these books to my students, then have them write their own scary or creepy stories.

Children in 5th or 6th grade would like these stories. On the book it says these books are for ages 10 and up. I think anyone younger than that might be afraid after reading these stories. I think they are for older kids that can handle reading scary stories without having nightmares. They are for kids that understand these stories are not real.
