Blog #2 Donalyn Miller

Blog #2 Donalyn Miller

This chapter was a great read. I was able to actually read and remember what I was reading which is always good. It really took me back to my childhood. Donalyn Miller said a few things that triggered memories for me and really made me smile. For example, she mentioned something like, if you haven’t said excuse me to a parking meter or ran into a bush while reading you haven’t really read. I was smiling because I was able to relate to that, or I used to. That’s when I frowned because I realized its been a very long time since I’ve gotten lost in a book. Kind of made me sad. I used to love reading. I was such a nerd that I had a bookmark collection. I would buy a new bookmark for every book I read and if I had too many bookmarks that just meant I had to find another book to read and put it to use. Miller really inspired me to want to read for fun again. I am hopeful to “read in the wild.” In fact, I was doing so when reading this chapter which was pretty ironic. I read it while riding the bus and walking to work. Afterwards I felt like it was a much better use of time than just scrolling down and refreshing my newsfeed. Plus, it was a great way to multi task.

She kind of scares me with the way she talks about finding time in the class to tech everything necessary and still include reading time. I want to be great teacher one day and its good to know ahead of time about all the obstacles I will be facing. It seems like you must have great time managing skills in order to accomplish that. Which is something that I’ve been working on a lot lately, successfully I might add. Then again scheduling it all also seems like a big puzzle/challenge, but that is something that I’m willing to take on with open arms. In the words of Barney Stinson, “Challenge accepted!”
