Reading in the Common Core

Reading in the Common Core

CommonCore-Equal-Fail

“Reading is a big deal to us because we know that reading well unlocks academic, professional, and social opportunities, but for readers themselves, reading is a part of who they are” (Miller 3).  This caught my attention because just after I got done reading the first few pages I came across an article on action news that half of California students failed in math and reading on the new common core standards.  I still don’t understand why children are being tested in the way that they are.  Just because you changed the name on the test doesn’t mean the results are going to exceed your expectations.  I think that most adults and educators do not believe in the validity of these tests yet they are still administered in schools across the country.  These tests are the opposite of what educators and child development experts would recommend.  For the kids who score these low numbers the results can be very real and very discouraging.

I did read some of the comments and one person said Chico State has an admittance rate of 66% in comparison to harvard that has 4% admittance rate, this in return is pumping out dumb educators.  Another person who I am assuming was a parent said that common core is not the way parents were taught and in turn parents can’t help their children with their own homework.  I have seen a number of complaints on my own facebook from parents who have children in elementary school.  The parents don’t understand and are frustrated just as much or even more than the kids.

I think that tests like common core and star are not indicators of how much potential a child has.  I think these tests make our education system look like it is failing.  I also think that in a way it is, but it is the testing and standards that are keeping us behind.  The system needs to be redone.  Big changes need to be made, but until that happens we will keep failing a number of children.

  1. Great post and I definitely agree with you on common core and how the testing does not show intelligence and my mind can discourage children because it makes them feel dumb. I remember during STAR testing half my classes would just guess to get it over with because they always knew it didn’t affect there real grades. Why do you think Chico State is pumping out dumb educators because of their acceptance rate? I have heard parents complaining about common core because it wasn’t there when they were in school but I feel this is just an excuse because just because some material has changed should fully affect a parent helping a fourth grader with math. I hope you have a great weekend and I look forward to talking soon.

    1. I don’t think that Chico State is pumping out dumb educators, that was what one person commented on the post of the article. I think the exact opposite. I think the tests are the reason for low scores and that making teachers teach content for the tests is what is the problem. Too often I hear this is the way we do it because of this is what they are going to be tested on. The whole cycle is messed up. The new common core especially in math is really hard for many parents. If you are not good at math in the first place it is a struggle.
I hope you had a great weekend :)

  2. Okay I understand so I read the post wrong. With regards to teacher’s teaching for the test I definitely think with the new generation of teachers(us haha) that will begin to change and evolve into a new era of teaching for content.
