Dane G, My Brother Sam is Dead finished, started Butter

Dear Charlotte,

Recently I finished My Brother Sam is Dead, and I really enjoyed it. It was a different book and not one I would usually read, yet I still loved it. After I finished that I began reading Butter. I don’t know how I feel about it yet and it makes me a little uncomfortable. None the less, it’s new book that’s out of my comfort zone so I think I’ll enjoy it.

The end of My Brother Sam is Dead was not at all what I expected. It had no happy ending, no solution to the problem, and nothing at all went right for Tim. Saying that I totally agreed on how they ended the book. Frankly I didn’t like Sam and didn’t at all mind him being executed. He left his mother and brother to fight in a war even after he learned that his father was dead. That’s not responsible and so I thought that he deserved to be killed, whatever the circumstances.

Tim’s actions towards the end of the book really surprised me. Not only did he not choose a side to fight on, he tried to save his brother by disobeying his mother. I thought that was very out of character for him and I think that it’s a perfect way sum up what losing family and dealing with war will do to you.

If I thought My Brother Sam is Dead was out of my comfort zone, the Butter isn’t even close. Its already making me cringe and I’m not even half way through it. I feel bad for Butter and I really hope he loses the weight, but based on how the book seems to be going, I don’t think that it’s going to happen.

Hope your’e enjoying the books and I can’t wait to see what happens in Butter. This experience has really brought me out of my comfort zone, and I’ve really enjoyed it.

  1. Hi Dane,

That’s good that you are getting out of your comfort zone even if you don’t like the books. Getting out of your comfort zone really helps you find the types of books you like to read and what you don’t like to read. I think that helps when you go into a book store and are overwhelmed with options. I know sometimes I have gone into a library and was just too overwhelmed with all the options that I just left. I still don’t know what my favorite type of book is since I seem to have read quite a variety and have loved most of the books I have read.

I have been set on reading the Dan Brown books. So far I have read Angels and Demons, and The Da Vinci Code. I absolutely love them and couldn’t put them down. I just picked up The Lost Symbol and can not wait to start reading it. The last of that series is the Inferno which is next. At the rate that I am going with the Dan Brown books I will be done before the end of November. Have you ever been so involved with a book series that when you finally finish the last one and you are kinda of sad? I have and then I stop reading for a really long time. I’m hoping that when I finish reading this series that I will find the next good series so that I don’t stop reading.

I’m really glad you are enjoying the reading project. I am glad I started because it forced me to finally pick up the books that have been sitting on my book shelf for a really long time and these books are really good!
