Austin M. My Brother Sam is Dead

Austin M. My Brother Sam is Dead

Dear Alyssa,

Since my last blog post I have finished My Brother Sam is Dead. There were lots of things in the second half of the book that made me like it even more, and also a few things that made it sad to read.

My thoughts on the end of the book are pretty similar to the beginning  of it. Every chapter continued to surprise me with unexpected things. For example when British and colonial troops came through the town of Redding and started taking supplies that would help them in the war. After I read that it got me thinking how could the people of Redding live like that with other people constantly scavenging off the things they use to make a living. Also what would we be like if that ever happened to us? Things that make you ask questions and think in a book is why I enjoy reading, and this book had lots of those examples.

Once I was close to finishing the book I felt like I was more in Tim’s shoes and was feeling the same things as him. It started getting worse and worse for him and some of that emotion fell over me. Thinking about loosing your dad and your brother is hard to read, let alone experience. Even though that’s never happened to me the author still makes it feel like it is really happening.

I really enjoyed this book even though the end was pretty depressing, but that just gives you some knowledge about what reality was like back then. It was a great book and I cant wait to keep reading.

Wow , your comments on the book got me really intrigued. What did you enjoy most from the book? and was this book something different than you have read before? I want to pick that book up in the near future, it seems like it was a really deep book. I also feel that losing my dad or (sister ) in my case would be unbearable. i am very close to my family so an event like that would absolutely crush me. Im really glad that you enjoyed that book and i can’t wait to get around to reading it!

Right now I am reading Maze Runner and am really enjoying it. In the beginning Thomas is so confused because he wakes up in a metal box with no memory. It is really interesting because the author keeps you guessing. Thomas is the main character and has been extremely confused because no one will tell hime anything, he has no clue where he is or what he is doing there, i am really enjoying this book and can’t wait to hear about what your reading next!

  2. Hi Alyssa,

I thought about your questions and I think the most interesting thing about the book was when Tim and his dad traveled to Verplacs point and he explained how everything was new to him and how it all looked back then. This book was very different than things that I usually read because i’m not very into historical non-fiction, but this book really surprised me.

I actually just finished Butter yesterday and it was such a good book that I had trouble putting in down. The way the author wrote it made it feel like he was teaching a lesson and what it feels like to be in that position at the same time.

Throughout the book Butter keeps doing things that get him stuck into corners and he cant do anything about it. For example when he creates his fake identity online named as J.P. When he doesn’t tell parents about his website. Also when he starts doing things just for attention and popularity. The author teaches you a lesson by the consequences that happen to Butter at the end of the book for doing those things.

What really shocked me is how Butters “friends” treated him when they found out about the website. They didn’t even care that he was doing it, nor bother to tell anyone that would stop it from happening. It really made me think if someone was planning suicide, would there be certain people that wouldn’t do anything about it?

Anyway I cant wait to hear how your book is going and also am really eager to start the Maze Runner because I have a feeling that will be my favorite out of the three.

    Austin
