Final Blog Post

This has been the best class ever! This wasn’t an ordinary class where I felt forced to go to, I wanted to go to class every day. While I felt stressed out over all my other classes coming to this class made it all worth it. This class was just amazing and interesting all the time. Kim you are a truly amazing professor!!! You make class and life so much easier. I have learned so much from your class that I will continue to use for the rest of my life.

Being in your class encouraged me to read more and also read often. Reading doesn’t have to be painful it can enjoyable too. I hope to one day inspire my future students the way that you have inspired us all. Your way of teaching and how you communicate with the students is amazing. I believe that all educators should have that openness to speak with their students and make them feel welcome.

The readings this semester were amazing! I enjoyed the fairy tale unit so much and also our book clubs! One thing that was a bit challenging for me was creating the website. I feel that I struggle so much on how to put it together. Overall this has been a great experience for me. I hope to one day take one of your classes again. I am very upset that I won’t be having this class anymore.

Doll Bones Holly Black

Doll Bones Holly Black

Doll Bones by Holly Black is an amazing book! I enjoyed reading it and I plan on using it for my future classroom. This book is both cute and creepy. It is a bit scary but not to the point where you would have to sleep with the lights on at night. This book reminds me a lot of Goosebumps stories, I read those a lot when I was in elementary school. This book is about three friends (Zach, poppy and Alice) who go on a journey to return a china doll( EVIL DOLL) that was made out of a little girls bones. The little girl’s name was Eleanor Kerchner and she died in 1895. The dolls hair was that same as the little girl’s hair and the little girls ashes were inside the china doll to fill her up. They had to put her to rest.

This book contains a lot of imagination. Which is good for the readers! These kids go through a lot of adventures and have both agreements and disagreements but they stay together the whole time. This is definitely a middle school book! We never really think about how scary it is before becoming a teenager and having to set aside our toys and venturing off into the unknown. Holly Black did and amazing job describing the characters, their adventures and last moments of being kids.

Comics

Comics

The Article “How comic books can change the way our students see literature: One teacher’s perspective” talked about how sometimes it can be hard in the classrooms to make literature fun and interesting for the students. This article gives us many ideas of how teachers can use comics/graphics to make the classroom fun and entertaining. Reading these comics books makes students reading enjoyable and surprisingly many students don’t read comic book because they feel that they have outgrown the pictures. Comic books also help to develop much needed analytical and critical thinking skills (61). The primary motivation for using comic books in class is to provide the students to think deeply about the artistic value is accorded to particular works or gestures. Students are then able to defend their literary judgment. Thinking back to my elementary school days I feel that if we had given this new opportunity of reading it would have helped us a lot more because reading time used to be boring and the same thing every day. The talk on ted was really interesting too, it shows how new generations are learning differently than past generations … new generations are using more technology. We as teachers need to incorporate that in the classroom.  Remixes are great to use in the classroom. Gives the students a new way to think, create and new ways of learning. We have to be the change that we want to see!

Reading comics was really interesting! At times it was really frustrating because it was my first time reading a comic book ever! And I didn’t exactly know how to read this comic book. It took me a while to really understand how to read it. Pictures are amazing! I think we all need a visual of a story once in a while. This section of Reading comics has given me new ways to think of literature. Comics can be a fun activity a classroom. I plan to use comics in my classroom by reading a story and making comic strips out of the story. Also, making a remix out of the ending of a story would be amazing for the students! I’m sure that they would love it and enjoy it.

So much depends upon…

So much depends upon…

  1. In this poem Williams sees the lifestyle of the working class person who uses a wheel barrow to get his work done. He sees the hard work that is put into it every day no matter the weather circumstances. The wheel barrow might represent hope, he might depend on it to do all his work on the farm. Sometimes simple things can mean so much to us.
