The series book I chose to read was King and Kayla. King and Kayla is an adorable story about a hunt for the missing peanut butter treats Kayla had made for the new puppy down the street. At first Kayla suspects her dog King ate the treats but soon realizes it wasn’t him and they go on a mystery together to solve who took the treats. I really enjoyed the plot and thought it was very entertaining and such a cute story. I think the first grade maybe second grade age group would love this series especially because it involves dogs as well. There are many games and recipes that go off this series that are available to young children. There also are other books to read in the King and Kayla series.

I think this would be a perfect beginner series book to implement into my own classroom. This book could be a class read or even a take home book. Starting a series book is how I learned to love to read and I think it could inspire some of my future students. King ans Kayla is such a perfect beginner series book that keeps its readers hooked with mystery. I will definitely use this book in my future classroom.

Make 4 Are you a Super Hero?

Make 4 Are you a Super Hero?

I created a quiz that asks a series of questions to find out if you have what it takes to be a super hero just like the Squirrel in Flora and Ulysses. Flora sees the neighbor runs over a squirrel with a vacuum cleaner. The squirrel’s brush with death causes him to develop so called superpowers. Flora then named the squirrel Ulysses after the vacuum cleaner accident. Flora explains to Ulysses that he must use his newfound powers to right wrongs, fight injustice, “or something.” The quiz I created is a fun interactive way to find out if you too have powers like Ulysses.

Flora and ulysses is about Flora  “a natural born cynic” 10-old. She finds herself at odds with her mother after her parents’ divorce. While reading a comic book her mother has asked her not to read, Flora sees the neighbor accidentally vacuum up a squirrel in her backyard. Flora comes to the rescue of the squirrel, who immediately exhibits unusual abilities. Flora believes the squirrel is a superhero and that her mother is its arch-nemesis. For this reason, Flora sets out to save her squirrel from her mother only to find it is the squirrel who saves them.

This book connected to my own life because I can remember being a kid and always feeling that my parents were at odds against me. When you are younger life is all about imaginary play and make believe. Sometimes my parents wouldn’t feed into my imagination and i would look upon them negatively. I think it is important to support the ideas of young young children and let their imagination run free. I think this texts wants readers to talk about the struggles flora has with her family and what she is doing to deal with it and take on this mighty adventure of saving the superhero squirrel.

Here is the link to the Peanut Butter dog treat recipe inspired by the novel I read King and Kayla and the mystery of the missing dog treat. This cute story is a great read for students at the first and second grade level. Kayla and her dog King are on a mystery hunt for who ate her special peanut butter dog treats she made for the new puppy down the street. In the end they solve the mystery to find out that it was the sneaky cat in the house. I decided to make my own recipe for the dog treats that King and kayla are on the hunt for. I can’t wait for my own dog Teddy to try these delicious treats.
