Week 3 Make 1David, Destinee, Erik, Lauren

Our group for our make chose to make an A-Z fairytale book to kind of reference and contain all the fairytales from A-Z. Instead of putting it in an actual book we put it on a powerpoint slides as if you are flipping through the book. We really enjoyed doing this as it was a  lot of fun deciding which fairytales to put/not put in and was also quite a bit difficult to find  letters that actually are the name of certain fairytales. It was not that difficult and kind of interesting to kind of dig deep and to find multiple fairy tales. Another part of our make was a cinderella puzzle at the end of our fairytale book which you are able to solve and put together to see a photo of cinderella :)

Fairy tales:

I think the story of Little Red Riding Hood  although having a very generic story line, has a lot of application to the real world both literal and metaphorically. One thing that stood out to me of the reoccurring theme throughout the stories of Little Red Riding Hood is that throughout many of  the different versions , there seems to be a implication of  to be cautious and not believe everything you see/hear because if you do people can take advantage or use you. This happens many times throughout Red Riding Hood where she listens and takes everything that the Wolf says  that in some cases gets her killed or put in a situation where she has to be miraculously saved. Although is an exaggeration in the fairy tale, to an extent it is accurate and applicable to the real world where people are taken advantage of due to not much exposure to the world ( In the case of Red Riding Hood her exposure of the outside). In two of the different versions of the Red Riding Hood, her foolishness and not being knowledgeable puts in her in sticky situations in one( where she is saved by a lumber jack or the 2nd(      where she gets eaten by the wolf due to being taken advantage of.

Another thing applicable to the real world that was also touched on earlier is that in society, there is time where we are not necessarily guillable, but just not very exposed to certain situations or have a first encounter of something bad that kind of teaches us a lesson, and that is seen also In Red Riding Hood.As for us it may be like first time going to college, first heartbreak(etc etc) but in this fairy tale its Red Riding Hood first time hearing and seeing a wolf which due to her not knowing anything which is int necessarily her fault, takes her almost being eaten and dieing ( or dieing in some versions completely )

Another common theme that is shown in Red Riding Hood but also in many fairy tales that is not very true/accurate is that when you are in trouble or just in general, someone will be able to get you out of trouble despite you being in trouble due to a character flaw or mistake. For example in many fairytales as well as Red Riding Hood, she is saved despite her flaw of being clueless and not listening, causes her to be almost eaten where she ends up just  being saved in the nick of time by a lumberjack who just so happened to see the wolf.  This idea is challenged however in different versions where despite being attempted to  be saved Red Riding Hood ends up being eaten. This is very unrealistic and is a common theme in fairy tales, where in actuality that does not happen in the real world often

David Castillo: Intro to Me

David Castillo: Intro to Me

  1. I am David Matthew Castillo a 3rd Year at Chico State. My background story is very interesting and all over the place. Throughout all my k-12 schooling, I would move every year all throughout the state of California.Coming to college was my first opportunity to call  a single place my “home”. For finally having my own place of home at Chico State, I have made a lot of opportunities to branch out my new home and create connections throughout the campus. I have gotten myself involved in various organizations throughout campus to create my network that I have not had a chance to do.

2)To me there is  not  such a thing as just one type of “reader” and  I think that is one of the many misconceptions about being a “reader”. To me being a reader is being able to engage to understand and  take in information  in a way that you can understand/relate to yourself. Outside of school I read a lot casually such as checking my work emails, fraternity emails, and school emails. Although it is school related I have a habit of refreshing myself even outside of a school environment. Outside of school on my downtime, I read a lot of Reddit which is one of my very reads as they are tons of subreddits or communities to read in and about. My outside of school reading does not correlate much with my actual school work however that  is not necessarily a bad thing. My main takeaway from the Williams article is just very eye opening and brings up the prevalent issue  that  how society is very precise and is  very grey area about the perception and the implications of readers in general. That society labels and divides up  what they view/see as an ideal reader and that idea is further explained in detail in the article. It was a very good article and brought up many interesting points that we will be continuing to talk about.
