Hey guys this is charlotte. You two are who I have been blogging with. I hope your readings are going well. I have been a little confused searching for both of your post with everyone else blogging on this website. We have read the book thief together and I think from here on out we are reading different books so I decided to just write to both of you at the same time hoping it will be easier.

I loved reading the book thief and grew really attached to the characters. I watched the movie and one of my biggest pet peeves is when the movie is so off from the book and I was really disappointed in the movie. I felt like they left so much significance out of the movie and I tried to tell my friends who I was watching the movie with how wrong the movie was. If you guys end up watching the movie I warn you.

After I finished reading the book thief I read “Frankenstein” . I went off our book list because I had to read that book for another class and couldn’t handle reading two books at once in a week. I’ll blog about Frankenstein and you two can blog about your books and let me know how you much like them or don’t like them.

I didn’t like Frankenstein because I thought it was way overly dramatic. The style of the book was romanticism. I like the style the book was written in. I have never read a book in the romanticism before so that was interesting. So Frankenstein is the creator of the monster not the actual monster itself. Frankenstein was a scientific genius and took body parts from corpses to create a living being. After he created the monster he just left and the monster ran away and Frankenstein just ignored the situation. The monster was sad because he really wanted companionship but was rejected by everyone. He ended up killing Frankenstein brother and a bunch of other people in Frankenstein family. The monster confronted his creator and asked for love and for him to create another monster for him but Frankenstein refused and hated the monster. I blame Frankenstein for all the trouble that went on in the book. I just didn’t like the book it was too dark and depressing and overly dramatic. You two might end up having the read this book in either high school or college but it’s short and easy reading.

The next book I am reading is angels and demons. I just started it and heard it was really good so I am excited to let you know how it goes. I would love to learn what books you two are reading and how you like them. Hope you guys are enjoying this reading/ blogging project. :)

This chapter provided a good understanding of trying to get students to read. Some key points I liked were setting aside 30 mins of class time to read “provides students opportunities to fall in love with books and develop stamina for reading”.”The more students practice, the more they enjoy and develop confidence in reading and the more likely they are to read in their free time”. Although during reading time you must be aware of the “fake readers”. It helps students become wild readers when they are involved in a reading culture. Talking to other readers and discussing what they like and what they didn’t like can be fun and they can offer each other book recommendations. What I found most helpful as a teacher is to have the students write down their daily lives and find the edge time in their lives. Edge time is any random time they find themselves bored or waiting around. Also I can write up an itinerary sheet so that they can recognize their reading habits. With the itinerary sheet I would only discuss their progress and not grade them so that they are not turned off of reading. I am excited to share the love of reading and I’m afraid of turning them off of reading. What seems challenging is trying to get the “fake readers” to actually read.

Who’s the fairest of them all?

Who’s the fairest of them all?

The Disney Snow White is very cheerful with songs to sing along to just like every other Disney movie. But just like every Disney movie there is a darker version of the story. In the Brothers Grimm version there is an evil step mother who wants to be the fairest of them all. Once Snow White is older the mirror says that Snow White is a thousand times more fair than the queen. This is all the same as the Disney movie. In the Brothers Grimm version the queen wants her dead but the huntsman ends up not killing Snow White because she is so beautiful. Just like in the Disney movie, Snow White stays with the 7 dwarfs. What surprises me about Snow White is that even though she was repeatedly told not to let anyone in and that queen will try to disguise herself, Snow White still falls for her trick. What also surprised me was that the prince who found snow white’s clear coffin only wanted to keep the coffin for himself. He doesn’t just kiss her like in the Disney movie. The way she woke up was the princes servants dropped the coffin and the apple fell out of snow whites throat and she was alive again. The most disturbing part of the story was that the queen had to wear iron shoes and dance to her death.

The theme of the story to me is beauty and envy. Every girl wants to be the prettiest girl. The story is all about being the fairest. Snow White is the fairest and the queen does everything she can to be the fairest. The dwarves only let Snow White stay is because she is so beautiful. They won’t even put her in the ground, and the prince only loves Snow White because of how beautiful she is. He was even willing to pay just to have her on display.

It’s okay to lose the egg
The girl was never put in a pack basket
and no one comes back to life
For that tale was burned to the ground

No loving father wanting his daughter to marry
For that tale has trails of peas and birds warning of danger

It’s not a tale of many suitors for a young lady
For this Lady wants to marry all along
And this Lady is bold
Luckily Lady’s brothers finished the man she was supposed to marry

No, this tale isn’t about any of those
All tales have murderous husbands and all tales they escape
But this tale she took the key and with curiosity opened what she wasn’t supposed to
Escaping death she received wealth
