When reading this poem I picture a farmer. I imagine this farmer has animals and crops that need his time and attention. The red wheel barrow represents the work this man puts into his life, the wheel barrow being glazed with rain water could be imagery for sadness or struggle. when reading this poem it makes me feel like the farm is going through hard times and the only way out of the situation is through hard work. Using the image of chickens specifically being white could be a reflection of purity. my take on the vision of this poem is that Williams is trying show that there is nothing more pure than a man working hard to support himself and his farm.

Jessica F. Legend

Jessica F. Legend

My artifact was based on the book Legend. I made the base of my artifact into a book to represent Metias’s journals.

I then cut out the middle of the book to show the secrets hidden in his journals and filled the book with pieces I made to represent what I think are important throughout the story. I also added some of my favorite quotes from throughout the book.

Reading is important, students need to understand that reading should be an everyday
thing. Reading in the wild gives the idea to challenge students to get in more
reading time to improve their skills and overall love of books. It is discussed
how to squeeze more reading time into you day take a nook with you everywhere,
and when u find yourself sitting any waiting for a couple minutes at a time
that is the perfect time to break out your book (something I plan on trying) .
Another thing that is a good idea to carry with me is the idea of a reading
itinerary. I like the idea that this reflection doesn’t force students to read,
like the old reading logs did, but it is more of a tool for students to understand
and reflect on their own reading habits. This inquiry will help them understand
where they feel most comfortable reading, what they learned about their readings
etc. One thing that imam nervous about is getting the children to read outside
of school, I know when I was in elementary school I wanted nothing to do with
books outside of class and that hasn’t helped me in the long run to become a
better reader. Imwant to be able to get students interested in reading
individually because they want to, not because we are forcing them to.

kissing the witch

kissing the witch

I can’t pick just one story, but my favorite section of the book is definitely the tale of the voice and the tale of the kiss. These stories are my favorite because it was such a twist from the Disney version of the tale we all know and love, separately these stories didn’t give me the biggest reaction, but when read together I was very intrigued. I loved the fact that Emma Donoghue twisted the Story to make the “witch” a regular woman that everyone just assumed was evil, because of the place she decided to live. My favorite passage from the book is,

“wish to speak and you will speak, girl. Wish to die and you can do it. Wish to love and her you are.

I don’t understand, I croaked at last. My throat hurt.

She yawned. Your silence was the cost of what you sought, she said; it had nothing to do with me. what would I do with your voice? The music you make has always been in your own power.

Then why did you take my sisters hair in exchange?

She smiled wickedly. People never value what they get for free.(page 203)”

In the last story about the sea witch there is a line, “she who takes the kiss can also die of it, can wake into something unimaginable, having turned herself into some new species.(page 226)”

I think the book is called kissing the witch because the sea witch knew that kissing a witch was known to be dangerous and by asking the girl to do it she was testing her. But when accepted and done the witch grew attached and realized what she had done to shame the girl actually shamed herself. It showed her longing for others, and proved her life to a lonely one. Instead of scaring the girl, it opened her eyes and did make her a “new species” one that had compassion and longed for happiness.
