Austin M. My Brother Sam is Dead

Dear Alyssa,

Since my last blog post I have finished My Brother Sam is Dead. There were lots of things in the second half of the book that made me like it even more, and also a few things that made it sad to read.

My thoughts on the end of the book are pretty similar to the beginning  of it. Every chapter continued to surprise me with unexpected things. For example when British and colonial troops came through the town of Redding and started taking supplies that would help them in the war. After I read that it got me thinking how could the people of Redding live like that with other people constantly scavenging off the things they use to make a living. Also what would we be like if that ever happened to us? Things that make you ask questions and think in a book is why I enjoy reading, and this book had lots of those examples.

Once I was close to finishing the book I felt like I was more in Tim’s shoes and was feeling the same things as him. It started getting worse and worse for him and some of that emotion fell over me. Thinking about loosing your dad and your brother is hard to read, let alone experience. Even though that’s never happened to me the author still makes it feel like it is really happening.

I really enjoyed this book even though the end was pretty depressing, but that just gives you some knowledge about what reality was like back then. It was a great book and I cant wait to keep reading.

Dear Alyssa,

When I first started reading I chose the Maze Runner first but after I left it at my grandparents house I decided to start reading My Brother Sam is Dead. I am on page 132 and so far the book has really surprised me. Before this all started that wasn’t one of my top three choices and I didn’t think I would enjoy it as nearly as much as the others. After reading it for a few nights it has proved me wrong.

What really stands out to me is how the writer connects a kids daily life and a revolutionary war so well. The connection is made because the kids father is a Tory; which means he believes in the English government, and the kids brother went off to fight for the colonists.  After reading chapter nine I had to take a little break because of how emotional it was and what it would feel like if this same situation ever happened to me. These are also the things that make me want to keep reading because there is never a dull moment.

On of my favorite characters so far is probably Sam because its how I would want to be if I lived in that time. What interests me the most about Sam is that he stays loyal and brave on what is right, even though about everyone in his town thinks differently and is unsupportive of what he is doing. Also, while reading about him though it’s hard to imagine being away from the people you care about for so long. The soldiers going off to war and not being able to come home makes me think it must feel like being locked in a room and not being able to get out.

I have really been enjoying this book so far and cant wait to hear your thoughts on the book you are reading!

Introduction to Alyssa

Dear Alyssa,

My name is Austin and I am really looking forward to getting to read the same books and work on this project together with you. I cant wait to read The Maze Runner, My brother Sam is Dead, and Butter because throughout the past couple of months I have heard great things about them. Since we are going to be working together here is a few things you should know about me. I currently am on the swim team and basketball team, I also golf on my free time. I enjoy being outside and hanging out with friends. My favorite genre to read is non-fiction and lots of action. I also was hoping to get to know a little about you. I was wondering what are your favorite books you have read and would recommend? What is your favorite genre? What do you enjoy doing on your free time? That’s all I have for now and I cant wait to start reading.
