Austin M. My Brother Sam is Dead
Dear Alyssa,
Since my last blog post I have finished My Brother Sam is Dead. There were lots of things in the second half of the book that made me like it even more, and also a few things that made it sad to read.
My thoughts on the end of the book are pretty similar to the beginning of it. Every chapter continued to surprise me with unexpected things. For example when British and colonial troops came through the town of Redding and started taking supplies that would help them in the war. After I read that it got me thinking how could the people of Redding live like that with other people constantly scavenging off the things they use to make a living. Also what would we be like if that ever happened to us? Things that make you ask questions and think in a book is why I enjoy reading, and this book had lots of those examples.
Once I was close to finishing the book I felt like I was more in Tim’s shoes and was feeling the same things as him. It started getting worse and worse for him and some of that emotion fell over me. Thinking about loosing your dad and your brother is hard to read, let alone experience. Even though that’s never happened to me the author still makes it feel like it is really happening.
I really enjoyed this book even though the end was pretty depressing, but that just gives you some knowledge about what reality was like back then. It was a great book and I cant wait to keep reading.
Austin
