Finally Catching up!

Finally Catching up!

I am finally able to catch up!! Ya!!!

After reading, Reading in the Wild, I come back with reassurance of my own ideas but also encouragement to continue to purse teaching. First and for most, reading is fun and should never be treated as a punishment or thought of being tortured. I remember talking to one of my students and she told me her parents used to actually use reading as a punishment instead of using the time out method. Her brother didn’t like reading and when he would get in trouble his parents would make him sit in the corner and make him read a chapter in a book and recite what it was about to them when his time was done. Reading is fun and exciting and for their parents to turn it into a chore or punishment was disheartening for me to hear. I also took away that even though you may have a busy day with lots of stuff to accomplish you still need to take the time and allow kids to read. Even if it’s for ten minutes you still need to give them time to be on their own and read something that interests their own similar interests. Series are always a great choice when giving reading to your children. I can see how this would be beneficial because reading a series and having something to look forward to by wanting to see what’s going to happen next and what happens to all the characters is always exciting! I know right now with my series I can’t put it down and even turned down many times invited to hang out with friends just so I can sit at home and finish my book! Miller wants everyone to encourage reading. It’s not solely just our jobs as teachers to encourage reading. Parents, family, and friends can also encourage reading daily! I wish i would have kept a journal of everything i read so i could go back and see all i have read and even recommend books to my children that i loved when i was their age.

I think i am afraid about not being able to get through and encourage my students about the importance of reading things that they wouldn’t normally pick up. I remember when I was in high school my friends never really read the assigned reading and just read Sparknotes instead of picking up the book. I always wanted to read the assigned reading because I was open to reading things out of my comfort zone but many won’t take the time to do it. Making a difference is something that haunts my dreams!

Kissing the Witch

Kissing the Witch

1. Which of these stories is your favorite? Why? Which best captures the situation of women today?

I would have to say that out of all of the stories I liked, The Tale of the Brother and The Tale of the Skin. The Tale of the Brother was just a great one to read because of the passion and devotion this young girl had to go find her brother. Seeing her brother being taken away in front of her eyes was probably a traumatic experience for her. It took her lots of strength and bravery to venture out and take a chance hoping she will find her brother. You can tell she was physically unable to make such a long journey but she still pushed through risking her own health and life. I know that my brother and I are super close and I would do exactly the same thing! The Tale of the Skin was also an interesting story to me because of the challenges this young girl had to go through to get out of an awkward situation. She lost her mother and her father was trying to marry her. That in itself is just mind blowing and for this girl to make the decision to risk her life to venture out rather than staying in the life she knew she doesn’t want, risking her secure life of luxury, just to make sure she is safe from her father is so brave. She didn’t have anything to take with her but only her beautiful dresses. She finally is given help and a job by a prince who cant see her true beauty till she takes off the mud and dirt and puts on one of her beautiful dresses. For the first time you read that once the king is not able to see her true beauty beneath the dirt she leaves! It has always pissed me off to see that these princes in the fairy tales can’t recognize anyone unless they are dirt free, make up on, and wearing a remarkable dress. They sing a song about how they met the true love of their life and then when she is in common attire they can’t recognize them, its BS! Finally in this story she leaves saying “ Well F*** you if you cant recognize me with a little dirt on my face!” It’s awesome! I know a lot of women today who don’t change themselves for their men but you also have women who would so its just depends on what you value and what’s important to you personally.

2. Why does the author title the book Kissing the Witch?

This particular story sort of brings all the stories together. If I had known that it would have been interesting to read the book from the end to the beginning. Who is pure evil or who is evil only because of their background? I know that I would have thought that all the evil characters were just born evil but then you read about their backgrounds and what they had to go through and then you second think yourself asking are they really evil?  There really are many sides to a story and I like being able to get more thoughts and details about more characters than just the one telling the story or just about the main character. There is no happily ever after and the girl goes home to make her own decisions on how she wants to live her life.

Seriously Snow White!!!!!

Seriously Snow White!!!!!

As I began to read the Brothers Grimm I was reminded of the recently remake movie Called, “Snow White and the Huntsman” that came out last year I believe. This particularly dark version of the Snow White story tale, which I would say is more like the Brothers Grimm version started off with this exact scene described in the story. In the movie she pricks her finger on a thorn while viewing a beautiful red rose and also wished for a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as ebony. From what I remembered in the Disney version, the queen had always hated the Snow White. In the Grimm version the queen didn’t begin to feel threatened by Snow White until she was seven. It was interesting to see a little bit of Goldilocks and the three bears tale in this Grimm version. When Snow White enters the house she eats a little bit off each dwarfs plate of bread and wine that was waiting for them for when they got home. How is that possible that they have food and wine waiting for them if they live alone? She continues to sit and try out every chair and finds a bed to sleep in. I don’t remember any of this scenes displayed in the Disney version. I also don’t remember hearing a version where the queen tried to kill Snow White three different times with Staylace, a poison comb, and with also with the poison apple. The poison apple is the only threat displayed in the Disney version.  I was caught off guard when the queen asked for the huntsman to bring her Snow’s liver and lungs and felt the need to eat them.  Snow White was dumb and pissed me off in the Grimm’s tale. To be so stupid and allow some old lady to trick you three times with the results of almost being murdered was ridiculous. Snow White needed a big neon sign saying “Don’t be stupid she wants you dead” but maybe that might not have been enough for her as well! The prince wanting to take Snow White’s coffin to his house also surprised me. In the Disney version he walks up to her, kisses her, and then they live happily ever after. Grimm’s version is that he fell in love with her and wanted her dead body. The men trip, the coffin bumps the apple bite that chocked her to death is removed, and Walla, She’s awake. I was fascinated by the end of Grimm’s tale by making it known that the old queen had to have red hot iron shoes on her feet and dance to death which I found comical. In the Disney version the queen is pushed over a mountain cliff and like all other Disney movies we never see the death and it is always assumed they are gone. The theme I see in this story and like many other Disney tales shown is that there is always an evil character who is always portrayed as ugly characters who are envious of the beautiful girls and will go to murderous acts or keep them captive just to make sure no one sees how beautiful they are.  The queen hates Snow White and rather than sending her away she would rather kill her then have anyone more beautiful be around her.

Why Hello Everyone! My name is Katherine. I am a transfer student from Temecula, Ca, which is near San Diego.  I have always been a Southern Californian girl until five days ago when I moved up here not knowing one person and honestly not knowing what to expect when I moved here. This place is definitely different from my hometown and I know it will take me a while to get used to. I have encountered my first one-way street and it scared the living shit out of me when I turned the wrong way on it! They don’t have those back in Temecula and honestly I’m happy they don’t because it’s just nerve wracking. I do have to say I am enjoying seeing so much green around here and being able to hear and see a train travel through this little quant town is pretty awesome. The most green I would see from my hometown is from the wineries where I was a frequent visitor living only ten minutes away from my ever wonderful endless supply and pick of the many different wineries we have to offer in a 10 mile radius. While I type I am on my third glass of wine and I’m hoping to finish this before I begin to not make sense and have really bad grammatical errors (oops too late!) oh well. So my story is short and I’m hoping to meet some new people to help with this transition and have some fun while I’m here! I started to really enjoy reading when I started high school. I would always have a new book in my bag and many of my friends never understood how much I enjoyed reading. Instead of participating in cheer practice I would be in the corner just reading away pissing everyone off because they wanted to get everything done so they could go home!  I write in my journal and create short stories when I am stressed. It’s a way to let off steam and its something that really helps me. I enjoy reading basically anything that captures my intention. I’m not picky and am willing to give anything a try. Have I read the Twilight Series and Fifty Shades of Grey? Yes. Will I ever read them again? No, once is fine. Like I said, I’m not picky when it comes to novels but if it’s written horribly and I can’t stop wanting to fix everything wrong, then I just wont read it again like I do with my favorites.

Describing a detailed version on what a good reader does when reading is something that I have a problem saying because I think that there are many different types of good readers. For instance, you have myself that can read a book fairly quick but I make sure that if its for a class or assignment I continually take notes. Does that make me a good reader? I guess that it can be said that a good reader wouldn’t need to take notes and would capture and trap every event in their brain. You can have a reader that reads slow and takes their time and goes to Google for every word they come across of that is difficult to comprehend. If they are having to Google at least 30 words a chapter, does that bring down the qualifications of being a good reader? They are reading and making sure that they understand every single paragraph even though it may take them twice as long as someone like myself who can read a book pretty quickly while understanding everything I read. You may have those good readers who do research on the author and plot for the books they are about to embark in. They fully emerge themselves into the story and think of themselves as the main characters to make sure they are truly connected emotionally to the story. I believe that there is really not a plain and simple definition of a good reader. Anyone can be a good reader by just picking up a book a reading it. You could even say that someone is a good reader by just reading a book in the correct timeline as other students even if they couldn’t tell you a lot about the novel. They are good readers because they can read every word and finish the book in a timely manner.

I remember in third grade, once a week, we would go to the fifth graders and they would read stories to us.  As we walked in the classroom we could pick a book and walk up to someone and they would read it to us. It was the one time that I felt no pressure on remembering everything about the story and that I could relax and thoroughly enjoy it. I went to a private Christian school and it was always a daily thing for us to read the bible, get a couple of verses or a story to remember from our teacher, memorize it, and at the end of the day we would have a quiz on what our teacher gave us. Reading became a chore for me and I remember waiting for that Friday when I could listen to someone read a book that I wanted to hear and have no worries about a quiz after it was over. My parents noticed that I wasn’t reading as often as I usually would at home. Reading wasn’t fun for me and my parents and teachers noticed I wasn’t happy at the school.  I was able to go to a public elementary school for my fifth grade year and I truly remember that year as one of my favorite school years.

I read a lot when I am out of school. I am one of those people who can choose something to read and are really not picky about what its about. Have I read some books that are awfully written and that I have wanted to correct? Yes, definitely. I like to read and if I am into the story and it captures my attention I will read it. Comics, mystery, music, romance, biographies, ect you name it, I’ll read it if it’s interesting. I was a big reader and in high school novels required for example, 1984, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Scarlet Letter, The Color Purple, ect were required to read I have already read them. My older brother owned all of the books and when he finished them he would give them to me. Reading books about the wars only made it more captivating when the subject came up in school and unanswered questions were answered and having more knowledge about the wars made it more interesting to bring up facts and easier to complete assignments.

For one thing, we need to explore with students the multiple and varied nature of reading. We need to remind them that they are constantly being readers as they go about their lives, and we need to talk with them about all the ways they engage in reading and for what purposes. (We can also remind them that reading is often pleasurable and can be so in school as well as outside of it.), Bronwyn T. Williams has a point here. Most of the time students connect required reading to a chore or unpleasant part of the curriculum they have to get through to pass the class. Most students don’t think about how they are reading most of the day. They are usually reading Facebook posts, Twitter, blogs, text messages, street signs, menus, ect and I know that they are not doing all of that and thinking “ Wow, I am reading right now”! Allowing students to pick a book they are interested in, as little as it may seem, to many it will mean they have a choice to what they read and they will be able to choose something interesting and easy to finish required reading assignments. I really enjoyed this article.
