Week 1: Things to do in a nutshell (Remember: check out the Getting Started page for instructions to join the platforms listed below)

  • Bookmark Course site: Check out our course website and bookmark the site (read the syllabus and look over assignments) (approx time: 30 seconds to bookmark site; 15 minutes to look over website)
  • Join Perusall (<5 minutes)
  • Join Currents Community (and set your notifications to off so you don’t get an email every time someone posts) (<5 minutes)
  • Take Survey: Link here
  • Introduction post:

We’ll set aside some time to get this started during our first class session, so no worries about starting this before our class time. But if needed, you can finish up before Wednesday night (Jan 27).

This writing has two parts or feel free to upload a video where you introduce yourself and talk through the ideas below instead of writing:

  • Write an introduction: who are you? why are you here? how are you doing in the now times? what are your interests? what are you watching, reading, listening to? Who are you as an educator? What matters to you about education? No need to answer all of this; just a way to get to know each other.
  • Then, what kinds of ideas might we research in education this semester? Some initial thoughts: what puzzles you or concerns you in schools? We’ll return to “problems of practice”–puzzles of schooling–over and over again as we set out on a research journey this semester. Your responses here will give me a sense of the things you’re curious about already.
  • Would love it if you would add a picture! Could be of your favorite place, a pet, you… whatever you’re comfortable with. Thank you!

Week 2: Reading and Memos

By Monday night, Feb 1: Research Memo 1 due in Currents

Each week, we’ll make some progress on research and share out this progress in weekly memos. Our early memos will most likely focus on curiosities, questions, thoughts about the things we’re reading; as the semester progresses, the memos will focus on data collection, methods, and analysis. We’ll give feedback in research teams on these memos, supporting each other’s research. Memos will be due on Monday nights in our Currents community: in these memos, share with us what you read, thought about, worked on in between our class sessions. We’ll make plans/goals for each week together, offering support as productive researchers. Together, we’ll create prompts at the end of each class session to guide the next week’s focus for our memos. On Jan 26, we’ll make a plan for this first memo. I’ll be researching and writing alongside you.

As you’re reading and commenting, notice how Kirkland completed his research. How did he do the study? How did he work with data? What questions does this raise for you about your own ideas for research? Everything we read this semester will function as a mentor text, a text we can use to think about how we can do educational research and write about our research.
