what a reader never told you

what a reader never told you

Donalyn Miller expressed what no one has ever really put into words. Everyone knows about reading and how many people have stopped reading. It is very true that as readers in a 4th grade class we were very dependent on our teacher to help us be encouraged and motivated to read. As I grew up I did in fact stop reading or had a significant decline in my reading. I didn’t know how to set time aside for reading. I too thought that my teachers expected me to read for 30 minutes straight. Reading in our society is put down in a way. Just last week I was carrying a couple of books around in my purse to read every time I had 5 minutes because I knew what a crazy week I had going for me. The people at work were like “Really Julie a book in your purse?” My easy explanation was that I was busy with school and work and that the reading was for a homework assignment. However what if that reading was for fun, they would have given me so much crap for reading for fun.

I am excited to preread all of these children books because I haven’t read them in such a long time. I am also looking forward to connect my students to the reading. I am very scared to find a child at a young age that has given up on reading. I am also quite afraid of what the parents will think if I suggest all that reading. Donalyn Miller  has made look at reading and writing in a different way. As I grew up I did in fact experience a lot of  the things that she mentioned in the book. At times I was excited about reading and other times I too was a fake reader. It was really cool to bring that out and to have known that other children has had some of the same experiences as my own.

  1. Love that you carried a book in your purse with you, I thought of doing that myself but my book does not fit in my purse unfortunately. It’s still a thought more of a thing Miller has inspired me to try out to see all the times I can squeeze in little amounts of reading here and there. I get the sense that there is a lot in Millers book that we will be able to relate to as students and be able to implement in classrooms it’s just that we have not really thought about it until know that Miller is pointing it out to us.
