Snow White (bre barker)

Snow White (bre barker)

Snow White was such a cheerful fairy tale with little men singing, evil queen trying only

to eat her heart, and a prince that kisses the young girl instead of keeping her dead body. This

describes the G-rated disney version I am sure most of us are used too. Unfortunately the

Brothers Grimm put their dark twist on it, making the subliminal messages a bit more clear,

giving me a different understanding of the fairytale itself.

First of all some differences I came to notice reading all the different Snow White stories

were how the queen asks for Snow Whites liver and lungs so she can salt them and eat them.

In the Disney version, she only asks the hunter for her heart. Another part i found a bit

disturbing was when the prince did not kiss Snow White to make her alive, but begged the little

men to keep her in her coffin dead at his own home. This was very strange, dark and twisted. I

also recognized the relationship and characteristics of the dwarfs and Snow White where quite

different. I felt like it had a three bears kind of feel when she first came to the house and was

using the mens cups, beds and chairs. Lastly, the ending was way different. The queen had

to dance to her death in her shoes. This was way off from the cheerful Disney version.

Although there were a lot of similarities and differences in each story I felt like the

underlying message for both was beauty can be found on the outside as well as the inside,

along with the message “Don’t take anything from strangers!” The queens jealousy for her

beauty teaches us readers that jealousy is a ugly thing. One should not be envious of another.

I must say Snow White is probably my least favorite tale although there was a few good points

made by it. On the other side, I also think it teaches women that you must be fair skinned and

mind to the traditional women-men life roles that were present before the twentieth century in

order to “find the one.”
