My name is Daiquiri DeGarmo -Aplington. I am a transfer student. This is my second semester at Chico state. My major is Liberal Studies with a minor in Child Development.

1. I believe that when a good reader reads a text for the first time he or she should read the text slowly for comprehension. The reader may read over certain sections more than once to better grasp the text. Good readers will look up the meaning of words if they do not know them.

2. I remember in maybe fifth or sixth grade we read A Wrinkle in Time. My classmates and teachers would switch off reading the book. This book is an amazing read and it was nice to have the book read to you as well as read part of it to the rest of the class.

3. Outside of school I am usually reading some kind of book. I might not read it every day but for the most part I do. I read facebook feeds, emails, and bills. I absolutely read differently outside of school. The books I choose to read are usually science fiction, or at least lately have been. I do not think the reading I do outside of school connects with the readings I do for school. Most of the books I read are not educational. My emails are for the most part the only reading outside of school that is informational.

4.  Williams is claiming that there is more to being a reader. To be a reader is more than being able to decode words and put sentences together. Reading is comprehending, connecting relationships of several pieces of material, and having your own judgments about what you are reading. Students need to realize they are reading throughout the day and reading can be done for many purposes. Students need to forget the false association’s people have attached with being a reader and further being a good reader. Being a good reader isn’t reading fast but comprehending, asking questions, and connecting what you read with what you already know.
