Destinee Garcia – Blog 3

Destinee Garcia – Blog 3

For my series book I am reading Keena Ford and the Second-Grade Mix-Up. I love this book, I think that everyone can relate to this in some way. She’s an sassy second grader that doesn’t mean to get in trouble, but her actions sometimes lead to that. I would recommend this book to children who tend to make mistakes and have a hard time telling the truth, it can allow them to relate to Keena Ford and find a way to handle the situation. The central characters are Keena Ford, her teacher Miss Campbell, and best friend Eric. I feel like this book does a good job discussing how children face emotional honesty. Throughout this book Keena deals with trying to figure out how to tell the truth. She tries to come up with lies or something to mask it. Meanwhile this is going on problems arise with her best friend Eric. Overall, this book allows students to see that jealousy, honesty and being a second grader has issues but there are ways to overcome this. The resources that are available include the Keena Ford website (http://www.keenaford.com). I would use this book in my classroom to introduce an interactive reading journal. This journal would be filled out every time the student reads outside of class. Instead of writing a summary, I would encourage the students to write their top takeaway from the reading and draw a corresponding illustration. Some other things they could do include: creating a comic strip, flow chart anything that they can do that shows their creativeness.

So far I am really enjoying Reading in the Wild! I really enjoy the ideas of  a reading itinerary, which components to add to a workshop schedule and stressing that a book should follow you everywhere. As I read this I want to create a reading journal for myself and carry multiple books with me at all times. What seems challenging is observing the students behavior during silent reading time and noting who is fake reading. I would probably be really bad at doing this without drawing their attention. I assume the place I sit or stand will have to do a lot with it. I hope that I can observe this and help the student identify why they aren’t reading and recommend books to them. With that in mind I want to start creating my teacher library with a variety of books. Along with a teacher library I would love to create a library corner in my room with floor cushions and bean bags for children to be comfortable as they read.

  1. Keena Ford sounds like a funny book that can relate to most if not all children especially second graders. It seems like Keena has good intentions but ends up making poor decisions and ends up getting herself into trouble.
I feel the same way about Reading In the Wild. This book has inspired me to purchase more books and always have one or two with me. I do agree that it might be difficult to catch students who are fake reading especially without drawing attention to them.
