Hi Leslie,

I’m so glad you enjoyed Wonder! I have had the same experience holding back emotion on an airplane. I saw Marley and Me for the first time on a flight to Scottsdale and ended up near tears. Not a great experience.

I currently just finished Ready Player One and absolutely loved it. The plot line itself was amazing considering I love video games. This book was everything I could ask for. Humor, interesting plot (in this case video games/the 80’s), and a interesting love/friendship side story. Finding my inner geek in this book was very exciting. I found myself falling back in love with the 80’s culture and classic video games. It was also fun to compare the references in this book to my parents child hood. This book also had a great message too. That the real adventures are in the real world. Don’t get lost in the fake one on the screen.

My favorite character was Wade the main character in the book. He doesn’t have the best home life or what’s of it. His parents died when he was young and now lives with his trashy Aunt. He’s eighteen and attends school in the OASIS. The OASIS is his paradise. In this virtual universe he can make himself to be who he wants to be. This is why the OASIS is so popular all around the world. It helps block out the problems they have to face in the real world. Wade has wits and knows more than almost anyone when it comes to 80’s culture. This is key to being a gunter. Wade also has notability and bravery. The reason he stood out to me is because he shows this in the real world as well as the OASIS.

I really wasn’t sure what to write for this blog post, so as you can see I just rambled about Ready Player One. Hope you enjoy I am the messenger. That book will make your head spin. Anyway it’s almost 1 am so I should probably get to bed. Excited to meet you on Monday!

Drew S, Butter

Hi Leslie,

This book really knows how to put my stomach in a knot. I love this book so far. Even with the occasional paragraphs of disgusting eating habits.

I don’t think I have every read a book with such an interesting and some what weird plot. In it’s own way it touches serious topics. Such as peer pressure, bullying, and obesity. I’ve found myself very angry at Butter at multiple parts in this book. Mainly him giving into the attention he is getting for his website. I can understand how easy it would be for Butter to get sucked into it though. Being 432 pounds in high school is not a cake walk. Always being stared at. Being an oddball. I guess Butter just wants to fit in. Even for the wrong reasons. I have also been seeing the connection of Butter and Anna. They both are going through the same issues just on different sides of the popularity scale.

My favorite character so far is the Professor. Not only does he bring humor into the book, but he also is constantly being a father figure for Butter. He is always trying to guide him down the right path and do what’s best for Butter. Butter needs this support considering his father neglecting him and being “friends” with Patrick and Henry who are very bad influences.

Hope to discuss the book soon.

Drew S, I am the Messenger

Drew S, I am the Messenger

Hi Leslie,

This book is in the Drew Hall of Fame. No doubt about it.

I’m honestly puzzled on how to explain all the feelings and lessons expressed in this book. Marcus had a perfect balance of serious topics with things people go through everyday. For example in the beginning of the book you are hit with a serious situation on Ed’s first message when he has to deal with an abusive husband beating and raping his wife. This is a very hard topic to swallow so early in the book, and questioned my thoughts on the mood of the story considering the consistent humor established from the very first page. Soonly after I was warmly greeted with the indroduction of Sophie. A young 15 year old girl beautiful, but is going through life not knowing it mostly because of her insecurity and shyness. Although most “messages” were heart warmers it still was a balance because of the impact of the heart droppers. Needless to say it was an emotional experience.

Favorite character has to be Ed. He was a nothing as he put it. No achievments. No life time goals. He was just a cab driver who liked playing cards with his friends, and being hoplessley in love with Audrey. A fellow cab driver with the same plans as Ed. None. He becomes a hero or saint to people as he completes more messages. He did what I hope to do and wonder how I’ll do it. Leave my mark on the world, be someone who’s remembered, be someone people are proud to know. I just hope I have an easier time doing it. What do you think Ed’s mark was?

I felt connected with each character Ed met on his journey. Every event was a peice to the puzzle. Everything had a purpose. I hope I gave you at least a little slice of this book. You will soon realize why it is so hard to explain.

Hope you enjoy the read and please comment when you start it I’m loaded with questions.
