Discussion Prompt and Example (due Nov 11)

Hi everyone,

Since Jesse, our TA and middle school teacher teacher, is leading class today, I wanted to make the discussion prompt and an example available to you more easily. You can find this pinned to our G+ community too. Your response to chapter 7 (About the Authors) and Common Core is due Monday night:

Here’s the prompt for Nov 11 (you do not need to answer all the questions, of course. Borrow a couple to talk from. The goal is to engage in the ideas about assessment from Chapter 7 and Common Core):

Chapter 7: What can you imagine borrowing from chapter 7 as you think through assessment of your future students’ writing? How does their chapter perhaps change the way you think about assessment or how does it add some new ideas to your repertoire? What will you want to try out? What seems challenging still about assessment? How might you change some things for grades above 1st grade?

Common Core: What do you notice about the standards for your grade level choice? How would you incorporate some of the standards with ideas from About the Authors? Given your take aways from Chapter 7 on assessment, consider how you might blend their assessment suggestions with a couple of these standards.

Here is an example from a student, Kayla, last semester:

I think chapter 7 really changes the game for the assessment world. In my academic career assessment has always been giving in a test manner, either multiple choice or fill in the blank, but always test based. The chapter definitely opened my eyes in the ways you can assess students. I want to the different ways the book talks about to assess, looking closely at individual pieces, watching and listing to children engaged in the process, asking children to be articulate, and look across the work of a single child over time. That is four different ways to assess a child without giving out a test. I think that is amazing. I hate tests and the stress that goes with them. I would look back to this book and use the questions they give to ask students about their work. I would use all the questions they give to assess students in those four different ways. I think a challenge would be managing the time of assessments. How would you balance individually assessing students and still teaching new things every day? Something I’d want to try is the way Lisa does her parent teach conferences. I think bringing the child’s work and having notes on what they are doing and learning is a great idea. It helps the parents understand their child’s work. I think I would change some of the questions, maybe have more specific questions for 1st graders. I would also have students write reflections about their work and what they’ve learned and tried to do.

I looked at fourth grade standards. I also looked at first grade. The fourth grade standards are more specific and detailed on what the students should be doing. They want children using transition words and phrases that link their ideas to the topic, like for example, also, or because. I would incorporate these standards with ideas from About the Authors by using mini lessons to teach these standards. I would take one at time throughout the year and do mini lessons on them. I would also invite and support students to use these in their writings. I would definitely use the assessments talked about in chapter 7. I would ask students about their work, watch and listen as they do their work, and see if their work is changing over time to determine if they are using these ideas. I would use common core standards to help shape my mini lessons, as well chose mentor texts that show examples of these standards.That way we can talk about these ideas and give students examples to look back at and incorporate in their work. I would also have students reflect on what they’ve learned in the mini lessons and how they’ve tried to incorporate it in their work.
